Mason, G.C.M.G, D.A, D.StJ, Q.C (Hon.). This ceremony will see the acceptance of the Barbados Charter [Charter of the Republic] by which Barbados becomes a Republic and Dame Sandra, the first President. The ceremony will flow on seamlessly into the actual beginning of the Independence Day festivities and formalities as it will be then the 30th November.

Republic Day will be the day when the new Barbados Constitution (under consultation) is accepted in the Houses of Parliament.

Barbados will continue to be known as Barbados. There will be no adding of the word republic to the country’s title or name.

All cultural and ceremonial events will be digitally accessible as live streams, with additional public screens being erected in communities. All events and gatherings will have an allocated number of persons allowed and will be ‘monitored’ to ensure distancing etc takes place.

Travel restrictions and protocols in Barbados for locals and visitors including dignitaries will remain in place. Dignitaries, including Prince Charles who reportedly asked to attend, will have to show evidence of full vaccination or submit to PCR tests as directed.
