The Barbados National Pledge

Our PledGE

Image: Wikipedia

I pledge allegiance to my country Barbados and to my flag

To uphold and defend their honour

And by my living to do credit to my nation wherever I go.

The Pledge instills in us a spirit of Patriotism, a sense of Nationhood or, more broadly, Nationalism.

By harking to those virtues that may “do credit to my nation”, it has come also to inspire and solidify how we think of our country, and our roles as citizens.

It was written/created by Barbadian Mr. Lester Vaughan (1910 – 2003) — Teacher, Headmaster, Education Officer, Organist, Composer — in response to a competition run by the Barbados Government. Mr. Vaughan submitted what was to become in 1973, a winner and much loved Pledge.
