‘Tis Cricket!

Sunday afternoons can be so relaxing with a game of Cricket at the club level.

I recently spent another such afternoon taking in a Wanderer’s vs Malvern match.

My batting skills are a bit rusty but I can always join the Wednesday evening practice sessions for youngsters and novices.  I only need ‘the right gear’ one coach told me.  Trainers and socks maybe?

It was quite a lively match game with loads of advice from all and sundry.  A good number of ‘Boundaries’ were hit by the Home Team to the delight of the fans in the grounds.

Luckily no windows were damaged, though balls did strike a couple trucks parked around the field.

The Home team, Wanderer’s, was poised for a win at the close of play that day.

There was much debate on whether they should ‘Declare’ or bat out the day with only a little over an hour’s play left, light beginning to fail and shadows lengthening over the grounds.

One of the star batsmen was having a hard time of it, having seen the other first-order batsmen leave the wicket.  He was now basically holding the fort and closing in on his century.

It had been a good day so far.  Both players and fans had been in good form, enjoying the time out in the open.

Lunch also had been a success with hot meals (slow food?) and drinks galore, but after the final water break,

the Home Team’s remaining star got out at 99 runs or some such ridiculous score.

It was then that discussions started to heat up about whether or not to ‘declare’. Declare they did and took to the field in style.

dscn0919It was a jolly afternoon’s fun for me and all spectators.  Whether around the grounds or in the Pavilion we were all relaxed and entertained.  At close of play even Eric Atkinson would have been pleased with Wanderer’s performance.  ‘Tis cricket!  A fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Barbados.
