Footprints On The Sands of Time

One of my favourite poems is by the 19th Century American writer Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. “A Psalm Of Life” is an inspiring piece of writing which I deem a call to ‘live life‘.

It is, in essence, a call to remember our humanity.

In a somewhat related vein there is the the poem/prayer by Mary Stevenson (written 1936/1939) and the song by Leona Lewis from her debut album Spirit. These too treat of our human condition and desire or need to know that someone is there for us, watching our back. More importantly, the footprints poems and prayers is about legacy and stability. It is about past present and future inter-facing to create an identity of purpose.

A Psalm Of Life

by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream! –
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
 And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
 Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
 Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
 Find us farther than to-day.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
 Funeral marches to the grave.
 Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act, — act in the living Present!
 Heart within, and God o’erhead!
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
 And, departing, leave behind us
 Footprints on the sands of time;
 Footprints, that perhaps another,
 Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
 A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
 Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing,
 With a heart for any fate;
 Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

We impact fellow human beings in our circles of existence, our personal universe. We are all influential in our own way in our particular circle, and should make sure we leave worthy footprints.

Footprints In The Sand

song by Leona Lewis,  (2008)

You walked with me
Footprints in the sand
And helped me understand
Where I’m going

You walked with me
When I was all alone
With so much unknown
Along the way

I heard you say
I promise you
I’m always there
When your heart is filled with sorrow
And despair

And I’ll carry you
When you need a friend
You’ll find my footprints in the sand

I see my life
Flash across the sky
So many times have I
Been so afraid
And just when I
Thought I lost my way
You gave me strength to carry on
Thats when I heard you say

I promise you
I’m always there
When your heart is filled with sorrow and despair

And I’ll carry you
When you need a friend
You’ll find my footprints in the sand

When I’m weary
Well I know you’ll be there
And I can feel you
When you say

I promise you
I’m always there
When your heart is filled with sadness and despair

And I’ll carry you
When you need a friend
You’ll find my footprints in the sand

When your heart is full of sadness and despair

And I’ll carry you
When you need a friend
You’ll find my footprints in the sand

Where are your ‘footprints’ leading others? Where are they leading you?

????????????????????????????????????

A whole body of footprints work grew out of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, A Psalm Of Life, but for me his poem still beats them all.
